In the Tavern of Love - 5 day Intensive Workshop

At Mutlu Baba Cultural Center, Yalova, Turkey

August 11 - 15, 2009

In this workshop we build upon the foundation of the 7 primary elements of Mystical Dance - which correspond to each Chakra - and focus on dancing from the Heart. Set between the three lower Chakras that are physical, and constitute groundedness, alignment and power, and the three upper Chakras that are energetic and constitute surrender, intuition and Presence, we find the Heart and its corresponding movement at the center, integrating the physical and the energetic dimensions. Guided by the poetry of Rumi and Hafez, we explore the imagery of the Tavern and love’s intoxication through movement that lies between trance and control, letting go and technique. In addition to gaining more awareness of your energy anatomy and being able to dance from the Heart, you will take home a daily movement practice that supports an inner alchemy of transforming negativity to gold. Our setting is a Dervish Gathering House or Dergah, a true tavern of love, beyond any particular religion and open to all.

7-Day and Night Sema

Directly following our workshop, will be the opportunity to participate in an amazing 7-Day and Night Sema with live music led by Oruc Guvenc and Tumata to further immerse yourself in what we learn in the workshop. The Sema is open to all, and the lodging and meals at the Dergah are offered on a donation basis.

Trip to Konya

August 24 - 26, 2009

Following the Sema, there will be a road trip led by Oruc Guvenc and Tumata to Konya, where one can still sense Rumi’s magical influence. We will visit the tomb of Shams and Rumi, witness some of the original manuscripts of his works, shop at the bazaar they frequented, visit sacred Sufi sites and take part in wild Sema and Zikr gatherings in Konya.

Fee for Trip to Konya:

*250 Euro including shared hotel-room lodging, meals and transportation to Konya and from Konya to Istanbul, payable to Tumata in Turkey.
