Crisis in California Higher Education: The Struggle to Maintain Access and Equity
In 1960, the California Master Plan for Higher Education was introduced to ensure that students, regardless of economic conditions, would be capable of receiving a college education at an affordable cost. In 2011, the upholding of such standards is becoming critically questioned as public universities throughout the state have been faced with consistent tuition hikes, department consolidation and employee reductions. Students and faculty panelist will discuss the future of higher education in California and the prospects for student access and equity in the current political and economic environment. The panel will also offer alternative solutions to the issues.
